Color gets all the attention, but the finish (or sheen) is just as important. It affects how durable, washable, and forgiving the paint is.
The finishes, from flat to glossy
- Flat/Matte: hides imperfections beautifully; best for ceilings and low-traffic adult bedrooms.
- Eggshell: soft, subtle sheen; the go-to for living rooms and bedrooms.
- Satin: slightly more durable and washable; great for hallways, kids' rooms, and family areas.
- Semi-gloss: tough and moisture-resistant; ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, trim, and doors.
- Gloss: very durable and shiny; used for cabinets and accent details.
Quick rule of thumb
The higher the sheen, the more durable and washable — but also the more it highlights wall imperfections. Higher-traffic and moisture-prone rooms want more sheen; smooth, low-traffic walls can go flatter.
